| Arizona Press Women Affiliated with the
National Federation of Press Women, Arizona Press
Women (APW)
is a nonprofit organization of women and men who work as professional
communicators, journalists, writers, editors, journalism teachers,
photographers, film producers, freelancers and public relations
specialists. Through APW, members sharpen career
skills, network with top professionals and enjoy the camaraderie of
peers.
Monthly meetings
feature speakers who are published
writers or experts in other areas of professional communications. APW
also offers an annual contest, mentor program, grant and scholarship
opportunities.
APW/NFPW is the only organization in the
country that sponsors an annual journalism contest for high school
students. It also sponsors annual state and national contests for
professional communicators.
Arizona
Press Women was founded in Flagstaff back in the dark days of 1953 when
female journalists were not deemed worthy to join the Arizona Press
Club. APW received its official charter in 1954.
Today, our members are women
and men from many facets of communications. We are editors, newspaper
reporters, television anchors, radio announcers, free-lance writers,
public relations executives, scriptwriters, video producers,
photographers, educators, students, and managers of
communications-related businesses.
Our annual
Communications Contest, which takes place in January, provides members
with the opportunity to compete statewide and nationally in a variety
of fields. First-place state winners are sent on to compete at NFPW.
Winners are announced at the annual national conference.
The
annual May APW Conference features seminars and workshops open to the
general public and well as the members-only (and their guests) banquet
where the Communications Contest winners are announced and celebrated.
The High School Contest luncheon honors the individual students and top
winning school that took awards in the student journalism contest.
APW
is currently organized by three Districts: Southern District in Tucson, Central District in the Phoenix area
and Rim Country in the Payson area.
