History of TypeRider

A few months after organizing the initial group of Arizona Press Women in 1953, members decided that an emblem or logo was in order for APW, which was to receive its official charter in 1954. Some members who worked at The Arizona Republic asked Reg Manning, the newspaper's well-known editorial cartoonist at the time, to create a fitting logo for Arizona Press Women.

Manning drew an image of a woman balancing her spur-clad boots on the space bar of a typewriter, clutching the "reins" of typewriter ribbon in one hand while waving her Stetson with the other. The cartoonist leads the viewer to conjure up a cowgirl deftly riding a bucking bronco. He cleverly captured the strong spirit of an Arizona woman of the old West, while also featuring the high-tech writing tool then used by most press women.

The group used the logo for all official APW materials, including the newsletter, originally called "Arizona Press Women Bulletin." When Phyllis Heald became state president and newsletter editor in 1964, she came up with the idea of renaming the newsletter "TypeRider," in direct relation to the APW logo.
